The Orient at Home: The Racialized Other and the Transformation of the Urban Space
Resumo curto / Short abstract
This panel aims to explore interactions between different social and ethnic groups in historically marginalized and currently gentrified neighborhoods and the changing policies and discourses regarding these spaces.
Resumo longo / Long abstract
Within the past decades, labor migrants from across the globe settled within lower-income neighborhoods across European cities, where they established their businesses and community centers. During this time, literary, media and political discourses reinforced the marginalization and racialization of these settings and neighborhoods, which turned into recurrent environments for research in the social sciences. However, within the past few years, the central location of these neighborhoods and institutional campaigns to renew them have led to their rapid gentrification. Old residents, businesses and community centers provide those moving into new apartments with access to foreign products that become the necessary ingredients of an emerging urban landscape that we refer to as the Orient at home. This scenario opens the room for examining interactions between old and new residents, the ways in which these interactions contribute to transformations of the urban and/or public space, and ultimately, the role of social sciences in conceptualizing these urban areas. Thus, we encourage researchers in cultural/social anthropology and other disciplines in the social sciences and the humanities to submit abstracts related to these and/or similar issues.

Este panel tiene como objetivo explorar las interacciones entre diferentes grupos sociales y étnicos en barrios históricamente marginados y en la actualidad gentrificados, así como las políticas y discursos sobre estos espacios.
Resumo longo / Long abstract
En las últimas décadas, trabajadores migrantes de todo el mundo se han asentado y establecido negocios y centros comunitarios en barrios marginales y/o de clase trabajadora en ciudades europeas. Durante este tiempo, discursos literarios, mediáticos y políticos han contribuido a reforzar la marginación y racialización de estos barrios, que han pasado a ser entornos recurrentes para la investigación en las ciencias sociales. Sin embargo, en los últimos años, la ubicación de estos barrios y/o las campañas institucionales para renovarlos han llevado a su rápida gentrificación. En la actualidad, los antiguos residentes y sus negocios y centros comunitarios ofrecen a los nuevos residentes acceso a productos extranjeros que a su vez pasan a ser los ingredientes necesarios de un paisaje urbano emergente al que aquí nos referimos como “Oriente en casa”. Este escenario nos invita a examinar las interacciones entre antiguos y nuevos residentes, cómo estas interacciones contribuyen a las transformaciones del espacio urbano y/o público y, en última instancia, el papel de las ciencias sociales en la conceptualización de estas áreas urbanas. Así pues, invitamos a investigadores en antropología social y cultural o en otras disciplinas en las ciencias sociales y las humanidades a enviar resúmenes relacionados con estos temas (y/o temas similares).
