Não obstante as vozes que há muito se levantavam em latitudes periferizadas, só recentemente se assistiu à abertura de um debate público sobre racismo em Portugal, interessando, por isso, perceber qual o contributo das Academia e a forma como diferentes abordagens epistemológicas têm entendido uma realidade tão evidente, quanto silenciada.

Não obstante as vozes que há muito se levantavam em latitudes geográficas e simbólicas periferizadas, só recentemente se assistiu à abertura de um debate público sobre racismo em Portugal, interessando, por isso, perceber qual o contributo da Academia e a forma como diferentes abordagens epistemológicas têm entendido uma realidade tão evidente, quanto silenciada. Este painel propõe-se mapear o estado atual do debate sobre racismo institucional nas Ciências Sociais e, em particular, na Antropologia. Para tal, atentar-se-á à forma como a violência colonial, a escravatura e o estabelecimento de uma narrativa luso-tropicalista moldaram relações de poder que se metamorfosearam até à contemporaneidade, sublinhando como a raça tem sido operacionalizada enquanto categoria política de discriminação no campo da justiça, habitação, educação, saúde, trabalho, memória, cidadania e dignidade dos sujeitos historicamente racializados, como acontece com as populações negras e ciganas. Se, tal como nos dizia Frantz Fanon, resistir à racialização é resistir ao desaparecimento, serão também essenciais neste painel trabalhos que procurem entender o papel de velhos e novos espaços, colectivos e organizações anti-racistas, ciganas, negras e afrodescendentes numa luta constante pela igualdade e na abertura de espaços de debate nos quais lugar de fala, representatividade política, interseccionalidade e branquitude são temas essenciais.

In this context it is paramount to understand the contributions of Academia to this debate as well as how different epistemological approaches have been framing a reality that is so evident as it is silenced.

Notwithstanding the voices raised in symbolic and geographic peripheralized latitudes, Portugal has only recently witnessed the opening of a public debate on racism. In this context it is paramount to understand the contributions of Academia to this debate as well as how different epistemological approaches have been framing a reality that is so evident as it is silenced. This panel proposes mapping the current debate on institutional racism in the field of Social Sciences, particularly in Anthropology. Hence, considering the ways in which colonial violence, slavery and the establishment of a lusotropicalist narrative have shaped a set of power relations, which have evolved until the present, highlighting how race has been operationalized as a political category of discrimination in the fields of justice, housing, education, health, labour, memory, citizenship and dignity of historically racialized subjects, such as ROMA and Black populations. Moreover, following Frantz Fanon, if resisting racialization means resisting disappearance, it will also be central to this panel contributions regarding the role played by old and new collectives and organizations of ROMA, Black and Afrodescendent people in fighting over equality and in opening up a debate in which lugar de fala, political representation, intersectionality and whiteness have been key.
