Este painel propõe debater os museus de território como instituições de mediação face às comunidades que representam e o poder que os tutela. Subsidiariamente, convida a refletir sobre os dilemas que os antropólogos profissionais em museus enfrentam perante a ambivalência entre o papel de «observador» e o papel de «patrimonializador».

Abandonada a ideia de que o museu é um espaço neutro, é preciso repensar as funções museológicas e refletir sobre o papel do museu face às comunidades que representa e ao poder que o tutela. Hoje, os museus de território não são dispositivos meramente técnicos, são, cumulativamente, instituições de poder. Para além de educar, disponibilizar para estudo e fruição, peças consideradas relevantes, o museu desempenha um papel ativo na construção identitária da comunidade e veicula dinâmicas de representação cultural que funcionam como plataformas de distribuição de poder local. Por seu lado, o antropólogo profissional do museu procura apurar no terreno o que é pertinente através da seleção e incorporação de objetos no museu e da sua restituição objetificada (Handler 1988) às populações. A ambivalência de papeis entre o «observador» de campo e o «patrimonializador» com funções de mediação entre terreno-museu-tutela e de gestão das funções museológicas tende a suscitar-lhe tensão e conflito. Este painel convida à apresentação de comunicações que contribuam para o debate em torno dos museus locais como instituições de poder e dos dilemas dos antropólogos com funções comprometidas com os usos políticos da cultura.

This panel proposes to debate the territorial museums as mediation institutions vis-à-vis the communities they represent and the power that protects them. In the alternative, it invites us to reflect on the dilemmas faced by professional museum anthropologists because of the ambivalence between the role of “observer” and the role of “patrimonializer”.

Having abandoned the idea that the museum is a neutral space, it is necessary to rethink the museological functions and to reflect on the role of the museum vis-a-vis the communities it represents and the power of the museum. Today, territory museums are not merely technical devices, they are, cumulatively, institutions of power. In addition to educating, making available for study and enjoyment, pieces considered relevant, the museum plays an active role in the identity construction of the community and carries dynamics of cultural representation that function as platforms of local power distribution. For its part, the museum’s professional anthropologist seeks to determine what is pertinent on the ground by selecting and incorporating objects in the museum and its objectified restitution (Handler 1988) to the populations. The ambivalence of roles between the “observer” of the field and the “patrimonializer” with mediation functions between museum-tutelage and management of museum functions tends to provoke tension and conflict. This panel invites the presentation of papers that contribute to the debate around local museums as institutions of power and the dilemmas of anthropologists with functions committed to the political uses of culture.
